Tom Havlasek's masterpieces often start with a beautiful image. An image of a big champion, overtaking maneuver or other memorable moment. He is inspired by the stories behind the drivers and also Gilles Villeneuve has intrigued him.
In 1977, Villeneuve was a test driver at McLaren who allowed him to compete in two races. In 1978 he signed for the Ferrari team and won during his home race at the Montreal circuit. During the coming years he won a total of 6 races and he got world wide fame for his ' do or die ' driving style. Villeneuve was always fully commited and unfortunately this did not always help his relation with his team mates. The emotions between him and for example Didier Pironi were high after the GP of Imola where Pironi ignored team orders and overtook Villeneuve to collect victory. Villeneuve decided never to talk with Pironi again, unfortunately he took this very literal.
On May 8th 1982, Gilles Villeneuve dies on the track of Zolder during the qualification session.
