Limited Edition Canvas: Jim Clark in his Lotus 49 during the Dutch GP at Zandvoort
The Lotus 49 had its debut at the race at Zandvoort. Graham Hill put the car on pole well ahead of teammate Jim Clark who had to start from spot 8. After the start, Clark fought his way to the front and felt increasingly comfortable in the all-new Lotus 49. Halfway through, Hill dropped out with a technical fault and Clark eventually took over the lead. After 90 laps, Jim Clark eventually had a 23-second lead over Jack Brabham and Danny Hulm.
The Lotus 49 ended up competing in the official Formula 1 championship for over four years. Of the 42 races, a total of 12 were won. In addition, the team was most powerful in both 1968 and 1970, with Gaham Hill and Jochem Rindt winning the drivers' championship.
